The classical formula of calculating the reconnaissance distance is useful and simple while there are some misunderstandings when being used. When the target signal sources locate in the mountainous region and hilly area, the classical formula cannot be used correctly. A novel method of calculating the distance by the method of defilade angle is put forward. Firstly the formula of the defilade angle of compensating earth curvature is given. Secondly the calculating method is given and proved when the height of the obstacle and the distance between the obstacle and the observer are given. Thirdly the method of how to locate the real obstacle is produced when there are many obstacles between the observer and the target source. The pseudo code of the integrated procedure of how to calculate is put forward in the end. It is helpful to support the staff officers’ manual work and the computer’s aiding decision making.
